It was reported that Universal Chemical opened for business in the early 1900's in Chicago, Illinois. It was a late maker of bitters. Bitters and Bitter Wine were popular around the turn of the century because it was basically alcohol that could not be taxed because they called it a medicine. Because of its alcohol content, the product was popluar during prohibtion.
